Chassis No: 000 0017
This is of the most significant 935s from the golden age of IMSA racing.
Purchased new by Ted Field for his Interscope racing team and driver
Danny Ongais it was very competitive in the 1980 IMSA
championship claiming five podium finishes. At the Daytona Finale, Danny
Ongais qualified on pole and set the fastest lap in the race. Unlike
most other 935s that were raced for many years and constantly modified
to keep pace with the competition, this car competed for only one season.
It was never crashed or modified and remains in perfect period specification.
After the 1980 IMSA season Interscope ordered a new Kremer
K4 and this car was put into storage and never raced again. In 1982
John Klug purchased the car. In September of 2000 the car was purchased
by Carlos DeQuesada from the UK brokers Winkligh Garage LTD and returned
to the US. His first event was the HSR event at Daytona where the car
ran beautifully and all mechanical systems performed flawlessly. To
prepare for the first Rennsport Reunion the car underwent a cosmetic
restoration and as a result was voted “best 935” at the event.
Steve Goldin purchased the car from DeQuesada in September
2001. Goldin competed in US historic races including Sebring, Road America,
and Watkins Glen with HSR. In two seasons of vintage racing the car
ran flawlessly and was never damaged competing in approximately 10 events.
In 2007 the car was accepted and competed at the Monterey Historic Automobile
races.
Canepa Restoraton
A concours level mechanical and cosmetic restoration bringing the car
back to its period correct 1980 configuration has just been completed.
The car was completely disassembled and the chassis stripped to bare
metal. The chassis and body were painstakingly restored with special
attention given to body fit and panel gaps. Stunning black paint and
proper Interscope livery was then applied.
In the interior new dash top material was installed and
all the instruments rebuilt. The seat was restored using exact factory
matching material. The roll cage was carefully inspected and restored
to the proper brushed aluminum sheen. The electrical system and wiring
loom was removed from the car, cleaned and fully tested.
Mechanically every component of the car has been inspected,
restored and rebuilt where necessary. The engine including the injectors
and fuel injection pump has been completely rebuilt and produces 740
hp at 7800RPM. The transmission has been rebuilt and new bearings installed.
All of the suspension components were crack checked, the shocks rebuilt,
and new wheel bearings installed. The brake calipers and master cylinders
were rebuilt. New fuel and oil lines installed. A full racing alignment
has been done on the car including corner weights. The car is completely
track ready.
