1969 Trans Am Champion driven by Mark Donohue
Penske Racing was the Chevrolet factory team in the Trans Am series from 1967 to 1969, winning the championship with driver Mark Donohue in ’68 and ’69. This car is Mark’s ’69 championship car and the last Camaro raced by Team Penske. The team switched to the AMC Javelin for the 1970 season. This car is the ultimate Penske Camaro incorporating all the lessons learned from the previous two seasons. It was also THE BEST Trans Am car in 1969 dominating the second half of the season winning 6 of the last 7 races. Over the 12 race series Donohue won six times and finished second twice.
The car was designed and built by Chevrolet Engineering and Penske Racing during the off season between 1968 and 1969. Starting with a “body in white” (a bare body/chassis taken off the assembly line before it was even painted and was still in its white primer) the team fabricated a fully engineered roll cage that stiffened the chassis as well as protected the driver. The rear brake cooling was a unique "design innovation" of Penske and Donohue. They drilled holes in the front and rear of the driver's and passenger side doors, the door-jamb and the inner fender well in front of the rear tires. This allowed cool air to travel through the body of the car to the back wheels.
In period the engine was built by Traco Racing Engines and produced 450 horsepower. A M-22 “Rockcrusher” transmission was mated to a 4:56 rearend.
RESTORATION
A full “nut and bolt” concours level restoration has just been completed
on the car. The attention to detail, quality and craftsmanship
are second to none. Every element of this car from the hand lettered
graphics, to the unique Penske parts have been faithfully restored to
be exactly as they were when Donohue won the championship. The engine
was fully rebuilt by TOE (Tony Otto) Engineering in Suisun California
and produces 517 horsepower at the crank. Download

The car is fully sorted and has participated at only one race since the restoration was completed.
