1979 Porsche 935J
Chassis No: 009 0001
REQUIST A printable PDF document with Photos
In 1979 the Porsche Factory stopped building complete 935s and began to focus on prototype racing. As a result, independent teams like Joest Racing built their own versions of the 935 from werks bodyshells and factory racing parts provided by Porsche.
This particular car is chassis no. 009 0001, the first of the customer werks bodyshells delivered by Porsche, and one of two cars of the famous Liqui Moly Joest team which competed for the German National Championship in 1979, 1980, and 1981. The bodyshell was purchased from Porsche in late 1978 and built into a 935J by Joest’s team. The documentation with the car indicates it is a 935/78 making it eligible for the Le Mans Classic.
In 1979 this car was primarily driven by Rolf Stommelen resulting in 4 podium finishes and victory at the Norisring.
Over the winter of that year the car was converted to 935J/80 configuration by Joest Racing and Porsche Weissach mechanics. Joest was the only team allowed to use the factory Le Mans body work.
Volkert Merl was the primary driver in 1980 and 1981. Merl won the Nürburgring ADAC 300 in 1980 along with 5 other podium finishes. In 1981 he scored 3 podium finishes. After the 1981 season the car was sold to Albert Obrist and then to Bernie Ecclestone in 1998
The Car Today
This is one of the few unmolested 935s in the world. The chassis has never
been damaged or modified in any way and remains as raced by Joest. The car
has competed at the Monterey Historic Automobile Races and other General Racing
events.
Upon delivery to Canepa Design all mechanical systems were checked
and race prepared including:
• Electronics and wiring
• Suspension, crack checked, wheel bearings re-packed, pick up points
inspected
• Brakes, new master cylinder, pads, etc.
• Fuel System, hoses, pumps and fuel cell
• Transmission, seals, axles (short track gearing applicable for Laguna
Seca, Infinion Raceway etc.)
• New shocks
• Two new sets of BBS wheels
