This spectacular 275GTB left the factory finished in blue with a black interior delivered to its first owner in Belgium. The car was sold two years later to its second owner who imported it to the United States in 1969. John Kelly purchased the car in 1974 and it remained in his care for the next 33 years! Kelly was an active member of the Ferrari Owners Club and participated in numerous events over the years always placing well. He changed the color of the car from blue to yellow in 1975. In 2004 the car underwent a light cosmetic restoration including new paint. After the restoration was complete Kelly entered the car at the Palm Beach Cavallino Classic XIV Concours on January 22, 2005 and received the Silver award for Class 3 — 275/330.
Having enjoyed the car for so many years Kelly decided it was time for a change and placed it on the market. Canepa Design purchased it in 2007. Although the cosmetic restoration from 2004 was good, the mechanical systems of the car were in need of some attention. It was decided to perform a full “nut and bolt” restoration while still preserving as many of the original parts of the car as possible. The car was completely disassembled inspected and all parts cataloged.
The chassis was thoroughly cleaned of all old undercoating and paint, inspected, and refinished to the highest concours standards. All of the hardware was re-plated to an exact match for the original factory items. All suspension components were sandblasted, crack checked and refinished to new condition. All new suspension bushings, front ball joints, U-joints, wheel bearings and Koni shocks were installed. The brake system was completely rebuilt including the calipers, master cylinder, power brake booster, and new brake hoses.
Both the engine and transmission have been completely rebuilt to exact factory specification. They have also been detailed to a very high concours level. All new period correct fuel and oil lines have been installed. The carburetors were fully rebuilt and restored. A complete new exhaust system has been fitted including all new hangers. All accessories and wiring in the engine compartment have been serviced, and restored to show quality. The attention to detail in all aspects of this car, be it mechanical or cosmetic, is outstanding.
The body was in excellent condition having never been in an accident. All door, hood, and trunk gaps were carefully checked and perfected. The body was then block sanded to perfection and refinished in Ferrari Pozzi blue. All of the original bright work was in excellent condition. It was meticulously cleaned and chrome plated to the highest concours standards.
The interior is totally original! The seats, dash, and interior panels have been cleaned and detailed to perfection. The original wood dash panels have been refinished to new condition. The instruments have been rebuilt and restored to new condition. All electric systems have been tested and rebuilt where necessary. All of the interior chrome items including the door handles, and shift gate have been re-chromed. The result is an interior exactly as Ferrari made it and in spectacular condition.
Upon completion of the restoration the car was thoroughly, sorted, tested, and detailed. The finished car is truly breath taking; it is ready for the concours field or any of the world’s great automotive tours. This 275 GTB will set the bar for all those to follow.
About the 275 GTB
The 275 GTB was debuted in October 1964 at the Paris Salon. It was designed by Pininfarina and built by Scagliettie. The 275 GTB was based on the 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso and the 250 GTO. Being light, powerful and strikingly beautiful, the 275 was a very successful car for Ferrari. It sold well, with around 1000 examples made, and, as an afterthought, scored victories in endurance racing after the 250 LM was denied homologation.
By moving the transmission to rear of the car, better weight distribution was achieved. The engine used was a Colombo-derived V-12 engine that produced 280 horsepower with three Weber carburetors.
