The 356 Porsche is one of the great “drivers”
cars of the 1960’s and in its final T6 body style offers
modern conveniences coupled with old-world hand crafted quality. With
its fully padded top up the Cabriolet is as quiet, comfortable and
water-tight as a coupe, yet with the flick of three latches the top
can be lowered with one hand for the ultimate in “wind in the
hair” motoring. This particular rust free West Coast car features
some performance upgrades that make it an absolute pleasure to drive.
In 1963 two 1600cc engine types were offered in the
356B, the 60 horsepower Super and the 90 horsepower Super 90. This
car was delivered new with the Super engine but has been upgraded
beyond Super 90 specs with a 912 (616/40) based 100 horsepower
engine. The original front timing cover (with serial number)
has been retained. The engine is completely outfitted as a Super 90
from its Solex 40P11 twin choke carbs right down to the proper gray
fan shroud. The factory “90” emblems are in place along
with chrome wheels and Super 90 hubcaps.
A cosmetic restoration was performed on the car recently
including new paint, German cloth top, and proper square-weave carpet.
All the chrome, lights, lenses, emblems, and rubber are in “as
new” condition. The original leather seats, door panels and
dash are in excellent condition. The dash features a rare factory
VDO electric clock.
Canepa Design has just performed a major service to
insure all mechanical components are in proper working order and a
full “show quality” detail.
About the 356B T6
In mid 1962 the 356B model was changed to the T6 body type. Although
similar to the 356 T5 it features a number of modern improvements.
The entire front trunk compartment was redesigned around a new low
profile gas tank, which increased luggage space, and a new outside
gas filler that eliminated the hassle of having to open the front
hood every time you needed to fill the tank.
The fresh air ventilation system was completely upgraded
and improved. An outside air intake was placed at the base of the
windshield with controls on the dash to direct cockpit air flow. The
rear engine compartment opening was enlarged and a new twin grill
lid fitted. The increased airflow improved engine performance and
cooling as well improving access to the engine for service.
Mechanically there were refinements to the transmission
and engine to improve reliability and performance. Stronger connecting
rods were installed along with a larger oil pump and improved bearings.
The transmission incorporated refinements to bearings and synchromesh.
