Walter Donahue’s NHRA/AHRA Stocker
Purchased new in late February 1962 from T.D. Keyser Chevrolet in Lansdale PA. by the original owner Walt Donahue.

Donahue special ordered the car with the sole intent of racing in NHRA and AHRA stock eliminator class drag racing. In the early days from about 1962 to 1967 the car was raced on a regular basis just about every weekend, and was also his daily driver. He competed in E, F, and G stock class. By the 1968 race season the car was changed over to run in D/MP (Modified Production); that is when the cross-ram induction system like the one used on the 1968 Z/28 (twin Holley four barrels) was added to the 327cid engine. A set of “local speed shop” traction bars were added. These are still on the car today.

The car was a very strong racer with a large number of wins including an NHRA National Record, “Drag Times” magazine Jr. Stock Champion, and a Hurst Achievement award. During the 10 race seasons this car competed it was known on the east coast as “White Lighting” although never was lettered as such. This was due in part by Donahoe’s need to use the car as a daily driver and street racer.

The car was put in the garage in October of 1971 after it’s last race at Cecil County Dragway. The Engine was removed from the car with the intentions of getting it rebuilt for the next season. But by November of that year the decision was made to give up racing. From that point on the car remained in Donahue’s garage under a tarp.

Donahue sold the car in 2004 along with his old crash helmet, a few trophies and his Drag Times Jr. Stock Champion race jacket to Joe Petralia. Restoration was started in 2004 and completed in October of 2005. The car is as it was last raced including a set of Racemaster slicks from 1970!

The body was completely restored and retains all of the original sheet metal. The 327 engine has been completely rebuilt and updated with modern valve seats (allowing unleaded gas to be used), new hydraulic cam, chrome moly rings, and was balanced and blueprinted.
