An exceptional example of what “The Rodder’s
Journal” calls the “Ohio Look”, this car
was featured in issue No. Thirty Nine. Ohio look rods are“…
mean, …low, …severely raked with giant rear tires and
tiny fronts tucked well into the fenders and they have made —
and continue to make — a significant contribution to the styling
and of traditional hot rods everywhere.”
Built by Larry Henderson of Waynesville Ohio and completed
in July of 2006, this rod has rolled up less than 8,000 miles, including
one cross-country trip to Pomona and back. “ It’s nice
out on the road” he says. “Smallblock power, automatic,
Vega steering, air-conditioning — it’s pretty comfortable.”
The most striking feature of the car is it’s low
and narrow front end. The Magnum tube front axle has a five-inch drop
and has also been narrowed to 44 5/8 inches. To lower the car even
further, the coupe’s headlight bar was completely taken apart
and not only drilled to run the wires for the 1934 Commercial lights
internally, but widened by one inch to push the front fenders a little
further down over the tires. The front wheels are custom built using
40 spoke Kelsey-Hayes wire centers and 15x4 Volkswagen outer hoops.
The rear wheels are also custom built using Chevy 51x8 outer hoops.
Canepa Upgrades
New custom valved Bilstein Shocks have been designed to improve ride
and road holding. A Cardan U-Joint has been installed improving driveline
performance. The brakes have been completely serviced including turned
drums matched to arced shoes with new linings for consistent quick
stops.
