1960 Porsche 356 Roadster “GT” — SOLD
Chassis No: 86996
REQUEST A printable PDF document with Photos
The ultimate Porsche 356 was the GT model, special light versions of the standard road cars with improved power and road holding. The Porsche factory never built a GT version of the Roadster, but if they had this car would out perform even the best factory effort. This car has all the period correct GT elements but also incorporates modern mechanical upgrades that take this exceptional car to new levels of performance never seen in the day.
The GT elements included on this car are the pull up Plexiglas side windows, GT bumper trim, GT louvered rear deck lid, GT gas tank funnel, and GT seats. Finished in a factory color combination of Adria Blue Metallic with a full gray leather interior this car is absolutely stunning. The GT seats have had special slipcovers custom made to protect them. The steering wheel is a one off custom 14” diameter leather wrapped masterpiece, that sets off the 904-combo gauge and 7000 rpm redline tach. This car was built to Concours perfection by Willhoit Restorations and the attention to detail is second to none.
The heart of this car is it’s 2 liter 356 engine, the best in the day were only 1.6 liters and produced 90hp. This engine produces 148hp @ 5900RPM with 140 ft. lbs. of torque!
The 356 case has been modified with 911 piston squinters. 91mm Nikasil cylinders with JE pistons bring the displacement up to 1925cc. A SCAT lightweight crank is used along with Carrillo rods and a light Sport flywheel. The heads have been flowed and new stainless valves installed. The heads have also been converted to twin plug specification and spark comes from a MSD CDI unit. Weber 44IDF carbs feed the engine, and a custom 12V alternator kit has been installed.
To keep up with the new engine the standard drum brakes have been upgraded to 356C four-wheel discs with cross-drilled rotors. The decambered front suspension features all new Bilstein shocks and a 17.5mm front anti roll bar. The front trailing arms have been fully boxed. Racing aluminum tie rods with heim joints replace the standard steering arms. The rear spring rate has been stiffened by 20% and harder bushings installed. The suspension has been lowered 1.5” over stock.
The transmission has been completely rebuilt with Speedster gearing (BBAB) and features a custom short shift kit.
History of the Roadster
The best-known convertible model is the 356 “Speedster”. Production
of the Speedster peaked at 1,171 cars in 1957 and then started to decline,
and it was replaced in late 1958 by the “Convertible D” model.
It featured a taller, more practical windshield and roll up glass side windows.
The following year, the 356B “Roadster” convertible replaced the
D model, but the sports car market’s love affair with top-down motoring
was fading: soft-top 356 model sales declined significantly in the early 60’s.
