The 356 Roadster combines the fun and performance of the Speedster with the creature comforts of the Cabriolet making it the first choice for collectors who really enjoy driving their cars. This particular car is an exceptional 100-point example, perfect in every detail. It is at home on the Concours field as well as the open road. This is one of the finest driving 356s we have ever seen!
This car was cared for by a succession of owners that kept it in perfect mechanical condition, always garaged and never in an accident, it was loved and protected for over 30 years. In the late 1990’s it was decided that a total nut and bolt restoration would be performed to bring the car back to showroom perfection. Porsche experts Victor Miles and John Padarack were given the project. Miles was responsible for all the body work and paint, while Padarack rebuilt all the mechanical components, and did final assembly.
The car was restored over a 3-year period. All mechanical components including the engine, transmission and suspension were rebuilt and restored to factory tolerances and cosmetic perfection. The body and pan were stripped to bare metal no rust or damage was found. Because the body on this car was so perfect, it was decided to paint the car a stunning black. The fit and finish is world class. The interior was restored using German materials in its original red upholstery with red carpets. All the bright work was either replaced with New Old Stock (NOS) items or re-finished to better than new condition. In the process of restoration it was decided to take the car to the next level of perfection. Super hubcaps with chrome wheels were installed along with original OEM Hella 128 amber fog lights. A very rare factory fog light switch was located and installed in the proper location on the dash.
The attention to detail on this car is world class and the fit and finish is better than factory. The result is a roadster that runs every bit as good as it looks. When the restoration was complete the car was shown at the most prestigious Porsche event in the country, the Porsche Parade, it took first place in its class affirming the quality of the restoration and the craftsmanship of the men that worked on it.
This is a numbers matching car and retains its original tool kit and books including the owners manual, battery warranty card, and the two very rare Roadster operations supplements. In addition the car comes with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity.
History of the Roadster
The best-known convertible model is the 356 “Speedster”. Production
of the Speedster peaked at 1,171 cars in 1957 and then started to decline,
and it was replaced in late 1958 by the “Convertible D” model.
It featured a taller, more practical windshield and roll up glass side windows.
The following year, the 356B “Roadster” replaced the “D”.
The Roadster was built for only two more years ending with the T6 B in 1962.
